On December 9th, the Collectible Car Group of Pine Ridge will be hosting a classic car show to benefit the Humane Society of Citrus County from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Many models of interest, and adoptable pets will be on hand. The event will include trophies, a mini-auction, and prizes. Lunch will be available from the Brooklyn Deli. Location will be the Pine Ridge Community Center South Field in Beverly Hills, Florida.

Canine Good Citzen Training Offered

Canine Good Citizenship Certification is being offered by The Humane Society of Citrus County Sunday, November 12 from 12:00 - 4:00 PM. It is part of the Ride for Rescue and Pet Party Open House that will take place at the Citrus County Auditorium and will be offered throughout the day on a rolling basis.

Testing will be administered by Janet Billups, AKC Certified Evaluator. Cost will be $10.00 per dog. Janet is donating half of the fee to The Humane Society of Citrus County. Thanks, Janet!

Your dog will be tested on ten different skills which will show that he/she will behaved well mannered in a public situation. According to the AKC, "The purpose of the AKC Canine Good Citizen® Award Program is to ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community

Canine Good Citizenship includes:

Accepting a Friendly Stanger
Sits Politely for Petting/Grooming
Grooming
Walking through a crowd
Coming when called
(Sit down, stay in place)
Reaction to another dog
Reaction to Distractions
Supervised Seperation

One of the many reasons why a pet becomes homeless is because an owner has not taken the time or does not know what steps to take to make their dog a good canine citizen.
Good Canine Certification can: increase the chance of a dog being welcomed by a landlord into a new rental situation, especially if you have a larger dog or is a breed individuals might have misconceptions about. Your pet may also be more welcomed into social situations, or welcome when you vacation at a pet friendly hotel. It can also be a stepping stone to a dog being certified as a therapy dog, or for agility training.

Please consider bringing your dog to the Pet Party Open House November 12, from 12:00 - 4:00 - your dog will thank you for it.

"Pet Party Open House" Offerings Announced

WHAT: "Pet Party Open House" to Benefit The Humane Society of Citrus County,
Immediately follows "Ride for Rescue 2006"

DAY & TIME: (Pet Party) Sunday, November 12, 2006 from noon until 4:00 pm at the Citrus County Auditorium

WHO IS INVITED: Open to the public free of charge, pets on leash (with current rabies certificate) are welcome!

FOOD AVAILABLE: There will be hamburgers, chips, and soft drinks available to purchase from the Dunnellon Masonic Lodge #136 throughout the day. Come early to ride in the morning Motorcycle Run and Your Meal is on US!!

PHOTOS: Professional Pet Portraits will be available all day courtesy of Kacy’s Portrait Studio of Crystal River, FL. Photos will be available with or without a Christmas theme for a fee.

ENTERTAINMENT: Music provided by Black Tie Productions

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN CERTIFICATION: This will be administered by Janet Billups. The cost is $10.00 per dog (with 1/2 of that fee being donated to the Humane Society of Citrus County - thanks, Janet!)

VENDORS: A large variety of offerings from area vendors and providers of various pet related services. Available products and services including but not limited to: pet outfits, furniture, strollers, carriers, hats, glasses, collars, leads, pet bakery items, pet alternative foods, pet and wildlife themed home décor, specialty pet resort information, pooper scooper services, pet massages, area rescue organizations, groomers on hand for questions and advice, veterinarians on hand to answer medical questions about house pets and horses. There will also be vendors offering a look at new motorcycles and apparel.

RAFFLE GIFTS: A wonderful assortment of raffle gifts (something for everyone) including but not limited to: Orange County Choppers Autographed Photo, pet furniture, pet related supplies, trip to the spa for people and pets, leather motorcycle jacket and vests, gas barbeque grill, vehicle lube & oil change, collectables, and a Maxfield Parrish collectable print.

AND DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE……

RIDE FOR RESCUE: Prior to the Pet Party a motorcycle run will take place that morning! Registration to begin at 9:00 am. There is a participation fee of $15 per bike ($5 if you add a passenger). Participants will receive lunch, and a few raffle tickets to start them off.

Discovery Channel Stars Donate Raffle Prize to Humane Society of Citrus County Event

Orange County Choppers, which is the setting for the Discovery Channel’s hit show “American Choppers”, has donated a raffle prize to the Humane Society of Citrus County.

The holder of the winning raffle ticket at HSCC’s November 12th Ride for Rescue and Pet Party Open House will win an autographed picture featuring Paul Teutul, Sr. and his canine companion, Gus, the Bull Mastiff, posing with a custom motorcycle.

Other raffle prizes donated by local businesses include: leather jackets and vests, pet themed gift baskets, restaurant gift certificates, collectible items, and more.

The raffle may be entered at the event from Noon to 4:00 pm at the Citrus County Auditorium. Motorcycle riders are encouraged to come early to attend the Bike Run at 9:00 a.m. Entry fee for the Ride for Rescue Bike Run is $15 for bike, $5 to add a passenger. Entry for the Pet Party Open House featuring vendors, raffles, and more is complimentary.

The event will raise funds and awareness for the Humane Society of Citrus County’s goal of building a shelter for abandoned, abused, and homeless pets in the county.

Ride for Rescue Bike Club Challenge

The Humane Society of Citrus County announces an exciting addition to the November 12th Ride for Rescue Motorcycle Run and Pet Party Open House!

A large trophy will be awarded to the bike club or organization that has the most registered members and friends participating in the ride. It will remain with the winning bike club or organization for one year. At the second annual Bike Run, the winning club or organization will have a chance to defend their trophy, and perhaps bring even more friends.

Be sure to preregister and indicate the name of your Club on the entry form.

Snowmobile's Story

Meet Snowmobile!
He is an American Eskimo dog, and the mascot for The Humane Society of Citrus County.

He may be smiling now, but his life wasn't always happy.

Can you believe anyone could harm a dog this sweet? A cruel person used him for target practice and left him paralyzed with a BB wedged inside that cannot be removed. Snow was picked up by Animal Control and was slated to be euthanized, even though he was otherwise healthy, friendly, and in no apparent pain. That is until HSCC president Lisa Jacobson stepped in. She spotted him in one of the back cages at Animal Control where he would never have been seen by a potential adopter! She took Snow out of that horrible place.

This was Snowmobile, not too long after, at the EXIT Realty Leaders Grand Opening where HSCC had a booth, relaxing in the shade.

Snow has full use of his front legs, but he is unable to bend his back legs. They are stuck in a straight and stiff position, making it very difficult to get around. Because of where the BB is, surgery is not an option. But there still WAS an alternative for Snowmobile!

Through generous donations...

Snow now has his wheels can now run and play like all of the other dogs!

There IS an alternative to euthanization for dogs and cats that deserve a second chance.

There are too many dogs and other animals in situations just like Snowmobile had been in. While not all of them may need help to walk like Snow, there are many who are unwanted and deserve so much better than to be abused and adandoned, or discarded.

Help us make a shelter for animals in Citrus County a reality.

Ride for Rescue and Pet Party Open House Announced!

Ride for Rescue
November 12, 2006
To Benefit the new Humane Society of Citrus County, Florida

A Bike Run to benefit the Humane Society of Citrus County. All proceeds go to help reach the goal of building a shelter for abandoned, homeless, and abused animals in Citrus County.

Registration starts at 9:00 am, followed by the ride.

All preregistered participants are guaranteed lunch. Latecomers are first come, first serve. $15 per rider, $5 per passenger.

Come for the rideand a chance to ride the open country roads of Citrus County, stay for the party!

The Pet Party Open House
(12:00-4:00)

Immediately follows with pet supply vendors, activities, drawings, music and more. Dogs and other leashed pets with proof of rabies vaccination are welcome to also attend (the rabies tag is not enough, must have paper from the vet). Bring the whole family and meet the New Humane Society of Citrus County and learn how you can help make a difference.

Mission Statement

The Mission of the Humane Society of Citrus County is as follows:

Ø Establish and maintain a shelter/haven for rescued, abandoned and abused animals of all descriptions in Citrus County and make every effort to maintain a no-kill philosophy.

Ø Promote humane care and treatment of all animals needing protection in Citrus County.

Ø Promote the adoption of rescued, abandoned or abused animals in Citrus County.

Ø Promote spay-neuter in Citrus County in order to help alleviate the overpopulation of unwanted pets.

Ø Promote the extension of humane education to the youth of Citrus County, as well as to the general public.

Ø Support animal rights legislation.
